Audio Samples

All audio samples are taken from recordings from my band sk;rl , unless stated otherwise. The recordings were done in various studios using various setups. In all cases I used the Mesa/Boogie Quad preamp + 395 power amp and the Digitech GSP2101 in combincation with my Ibanez Universe 7BK.

Clean 1 (268 kb, 19 sec)
This is a clean guitar part from one of the songs I play with my band
sk;rl. I used the rhythm channel 1 of the Mesa/Boogie Quad preamp, connected the DigiTech GSP2101 in the fx loop for extra EQ, detune and chorus, and used the direct recording outs of the Quad Preamp to the tape deck. On the computer I only did some minor EQ work and added some (too much) reverb to give it some room, that's it. The sample gives a good example of the deep and richness of the Quad preamp and the beautiful stereo sound of the detune+chorus from the GSP2101. For this recording I used the Ibanez Universe 7, with it's neck pickup.

Clean 2 (156 kb, 19 sec)
Another example of the clean sound. The chorus and delay come from the
Digitech GSP2101. Recorded with my current setup.

This is a sample from the song "315". More of this song is available at my bands website: www.skirl.nl.

Crunch 1 (78 kb, 9 sec)
A crunch sound made by the Lead 1 channel, with the volume of the guitar rolled back. This gives a crispy sound and makes the (neck) humbucker sound more like single coils. The other guitarist plays the same riff but with more gain.

This is a sample from the song "hide behind". More of this song is available at my bands website: www.skirl.nl.

Crunch 2 (156 kb, 19 sec)
For this I used the Rhythm sound on channel 2 of the
Quad preamp. It breaks up totally different the the other channels. Has lots of sustain and a bit raw, overdrive, sound. I used the bridge humbucker of the Ibanez for this. These days I've mixed the clean sound of channel 1 with it for even more clearity.

This is a sample from the song "art152". More of this song is available at my bands website: www.skirl.nl.

Distortion 1 (88 kb, 10 sec)
Don't remember if I used Lead 1 or Lead 2 of the
Quad preamp for this. Anyway, it's a thick sound. In the background you hear the other guitar player as well, who has a bit different top-end. The delay on the end is done with the DigiTech GSP2101. The fade-in is realtime!

This is a sample from the song "hide behind". More of this song is available at my bands website: www.skirl.nl.

Solo (186 kb, 23 sec)
All guitars you hear are done by me. For the first part and the rhythm guitar I used the Lead 2 on the
Quad preamp. For the solo I used the same channel, but backed off the volume of the guitar and used a single coil.

This is a sample from the song "asa foetida". More of this song is available at my bands website: www.skirl.nl.

Wah (80 kb, 9 sec)
The beautiful
Teese RMC3 wah together with the Lead 2 sound of the Quad preamp.

This is a sample from the song "asa foetida". More of this song is available at my bands website: www.skirl.nl.

Synth 1 (138 kb, 17 sec)
Short example of a synth sound I use. Fade in is done with a midi controlled volume pedal. Synth sound is created by the
Digitech GSP2101 and the Lead 1 or Lead 2 channel of the Quad preamp. This is one of the nicest sounds I have. Responds to subtle changes in tone, dynamics and notes. For this you should put your face right in front of the 4x12". This sample is mono, the real sound is much wider thanx to the stereo chorus and stereo tap delay.

This is a sample from the song "hide behind". More of this song is available at my bands website: www.skirl.nl.

Synth 2 (206 kb, 25 sec)
Same sound as above, this is the end of the song. Everything you hear is my guitar, wah, amp and fx. No studio gadgets were used and no other instruments ring out. As I said before, for this you should put your face right in front of the
4x12".

This is a sample from the song "hide behind". More of this song is available at my bands website: www.skirl.nl.

Old Synth (142 kb, mp3, 10 sec)
This one you got to hear!!!!. It is always fun to play with the endless possibilities of the DigiTech GSP2101. This was recorded only with the GSP2101 directly into the computer, the guitar was a 12 string acoustic Ibanez (which causes the white noise at the end of the recording). Nothing is changed by the computer; the way it sounds, that's the way it is!. Fade in and outs are done automatically by the GSP2101, so no volume control was needed for the fades.

The sound is quite similar to the old 70's analog synths. It was quite tricky to make the sound perfect. You could come close by just using a chorus, reverb, delay and the guitar volume pot for fade-ins, but it wouldn't have the complexity and perfection of this one, which is just too much to post online with audio samples. Most people use arpeggiators and pitchshifters to create a synth sound, but this mostly results in something that sounds over-processed.

I made a complex configuration containing a noise gate (for slow fade-ins), automatic wah (very important), low pass filter, gated reverb (does some really wicked stuff), stereo detuner and a 1 sec. 2tap delay. And if I want a sound with more resonance, like the Moog and 303 synths, I just switch on a distortion and do some eq-ing. I think this is the best example yet to show the flexibility and complex possibilities of the GSP2101. I don't know of any device capable of doing this as well besides the Eventides (which cost more then $2,000.-).

This is ambient to the max.
